Helping every child find a book they’ll love.
Our Story
KG’s Kids is a nonprofit literacy based organization dedicated to emphasizing education-starting with reading-to create opportunities for all students to succeed in school.
We believe literacy is the foundation of academic achievement, confidence, and long-term success, and we work to ensure that every child has access to books and the encouragement to become a strong reader.
KG’s Kids was founded by longtime educators David and Heather Granson. KG’s Kids was inspired by our passion for developing young readers and by the educational journey of our son, Kylen Granson. Kylen has been an avid reader since the first grade, and his academic excellence reflects the power of early literacy.
Before becoming a record-setting tight end at Southern Methodist University, Kylen earned an academic scholarship, proof that his love of reading opened doors long before athletics did. Today, he continues to excel as a tight end for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Kylen and our family have inspired thousands of students through our commitment to motivating young readers. Through our influence, children find excitement in stories with characters who look like them and experiences they can relate to, reinforcing their belief that representation and access matter. Research shows that students with classroom libraries are 50% more likely to read, and children with at least 20 books at home gain the equivalent of three additional years of schooling. These findings guide our work and fuel our commitment to providing books to students in underserved communities.
To date, KG’s Kids has served more than 11,000 students across 19 school districts, distributing over 111,000 brand-new books. As we grow, we are expanding our impact through innovative initiatives, including the KG’s Kids AI Studio, designed to support parents and educators in helping struggling or reluctant readers, and a new certification program for Media Assistants to strengthen school library staffing and literacy leadership.
KG's Kids is built on the belief that every child deserves access to books, representation in stories, and the opportunity to become a confident reader.
INSPIRATION
The Inspiration Behind Our Work
KG’s Kids was born from something deeply personal, the story of a boy who grew up believing that books could change his life. Long before Kylen Granson became an NFL player, he was a kid who found confidence, imagination, and possibility in the pages of the stories he read. His mom, Heather, made sure of that. She filled their home with books, encouraged curiosity, and taught him that literacy wasn’t just a school skill, it was a doorway to opportunity.
As Kylen grew, so did his understanding of how many children never get that same chance. He saw classrooms where books were outdated or missing entirely. He met students who had never owned a book of their own. And he remembered what reading had done for him how it shaped his identity, strengthened his academics, and helped him dream beyond his circumstances.
KG’s Kids was created to close that gap. What began as one family’s belief in the power of reading has grown into a movement that now serves thousands of students across Central Indiana, North Texas, and Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Every book gifted, every classroom supported, and every child reached is a continuation of Kylen’s story, a reminder that when you invest in a child’s literacy, you invest in their future.
KG’s Kids works to emphasize education, starting with reading, to create opportunities for all students to be successful in school.
KG’s Kids envisions a future where every student has equitable access to books, educational resources, and the support needed to succeed in school and beyond.
